In a move gaining global attention, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as a "historic correction." Sarma emphasized that this decision liberates India from an agreement imposed under external pressure from the World Bank and the American administration during Jawaharlal Nehru’s leadership.

Sarma criticized Nehru's decision, stating:

"Over 80% of Indus basin waters were handed over to Pakistan, undermining India's natural geographical advantage and resource rights."

Impact on India's Water Resources

According to Sarma, artificial restrictions on water usage significantly harmed the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir. The limitations restricted India’s ability to develop sustainable and independent water resources for its own agricultural and energy needs.

Modi’s Bold Move: Strengthening India's Strategic Interests

Sarma described Prime Minister Modi’s decision as a turning point:

"This bold step directly targets Pakistan’s fragile economy, where more than 75% of agriculture relies on Indus waters. It ends decades of historic betrayal and marks India's resurgence as a nation determined to defend its vital interests without hesitation."
